What is Food Security??
Food security is defined as "a condition in which community residents obtain a safe,
culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate diet through a sustainable food system, maximizing
self-reliance and social justice. (Hamm & Bellows) Food insecurity is an issue of health - community health and individual health and well being.
What is meant by "Food System??
The term "food system" is frequently used in discussions about nutrition, food, health, community economic development and agriculture. A food system includes all processes involved in feeding a population: growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, transporting, marketing, consumption, and disposal of food and food-related items. It also includes the inputs needed and outputs generated at each of the steps. A food system operates within and is influenced by social, political, economic and environmental contexts.
